Module 1- The Mindset Shift
If you’ve made it to this point, don’t worry- it is clear you’ve already begun the process outline in this module. Having undergone this entire process myself last year, I know how irritating it is to be seeking detailed, actionable information on how to do something, only to be told, “the secret to success is in mastering your mind,” or some mumbo jumbo. I get it, I experienced it, and I feel obligated to acknowledge that it exists.
When I first set out on this journey, I would find messages about the importance of attitude while simply Googling “how to choose your niche.” I would research the hacks and tips offered by the world’s most successful people only to discover they “manifested” their riches or meditated their way to billionaire status. It was as if I was asking, “What does 2 + 2 equal?” But, instead of giving me the solution, I’d be told, “in order to find the answer to 2 + 2, you must first evaluate what it is that is driving you to do so.”
Not only did I find it nearly impossible to locate solutions that weren’t attitude or mindset-related, but I struggled to apply the information from sources that I found actually did contain what I was looking for. I would search for instructions on how to start a blog, and then read hundreds of copy/paste articles with slight variations of the exact same steps. This ultimately helped me start to develop a clear picture of what the steps were that I needed to take, since different sources of information expressed similar patterns. However, it took me damn near forever to get to that point! The articles that had truly valuable information came from SEO optimized sites. Basically, these sites knew how to attract and retain visitors, and a key element of this is through links.
When I found a fantastic article that actually outlined actionable steps, it would contain so many internal links that reading it in its entirety was nearly impossible. The copywriting and in-line linking was so successful at what it was trying to do- keep me on its site- that it made it impossible for me to read an article until the end, which was do what I actually CAME THERE FOR. I’d read the first two steps, only to realize that what I read wasn’t a comprehensive explanation of step 1- that could only be found by clicking on the text hyperlink. So, I’d leave an article that claimed to teach then 10 steps of creating a blog by clicking on the link in step one, “finding your niche.” Then I am taken to an entirely separate page, offering downloadable templates and worksheets to get to know myself. However, right in the first paragraph of this article is a link to the “10 Most Profitable Niches in 2023.” Obviously, I want to select a profitable one! It’s a rabbit hole we’ve all gone down at one point or another, but I was getting so fed up with going in circles that I decided to take a break from internet research. I moved onto books.
I loved reading as a child, but as an adult I hadn’t really made time to read. I’d just been busy I suppose. The first book I read in this particular era of my life was “Rich Dad, Poor Dad,.” I had actually read it as it was suggested in a $7 online marketing course I had signed up for before knowing about the $2000 upsell that was heading my way. I recognized that the course didn’t align with my goals, and left, but reading the book led me to order more. Then I ordered book after book on Amazon.
One book in particular was to learn how to build an e-commerce empire. It promised actionable, detailed steps. I was excited. I opened the first page of the first chapter and read the following
Everything I tell you in this book- like how to choose a product, create an offer, and use the built-for-you funnel you’ll get at the end- that’s all the easy stuff. . . . those will be completely useless without the right mindset.
Peter Pru, “Ecommerce Empire”
I had to stifle an actual scream. Like, seriously?! What was it with these people and their obsession with the abstract, intangible aspects of starting a business? Why won’t they just tell me WHAT TO DO?
In the months that followed, I continued learning about and experimenting with all of the following:
- social media marketing
- brand creation and development
- affiliate marketing platforms
- user-generated content
- courses or products with MRR (master resell rights)
- digital products
- Ad revenue and Google Ad Sense
- SEO optimization,
- e-commerce platforms
- print-on-demand
- drop shipping
- email marketing and lead generation
- landing pages and lead magnets
- sales funnels
- conversion rates and ROI
- CSS/stylesheets
- Backlinks and hyperlinks
- keywords and keyword research (BOY did I go all in here-I filled two 200-page notebooks with my handwritten research on this one alone.)
And that’s just what came to mind when I was writing this, but it’s probably only a fraction of the list. My point is that I was frustrated I couldn’t just find simple solutions to my simple questions, but I came to understand a few key things:
- My questions were not actually simple, and there was merit to every suggestion that I take a deeper look in my “why.” Creating a website and a blog isn’t necessarily difficult but depending on the intended outcomes or goals you set for your blog, the steps you take will vary greatly. In looking up, “how to start a blog,” the author of the search results has no idea if I am a writer trying to learn how to publish my work online, or a business trying to establish authority on a topic to get customers to purchase their products. As irritating and unnecessary as it all seemed, each time I encountered an answer that I wasn’t looking for, I had to become even more determined to find the one I did need. Each time that happened was an opportunity for me to say, “I’ve had enough. This is too hard.” I didn’t. I kept looking, and continued to learn about everything I came across, persistently.
- There is actually science behind the importance of the whole mindset aspect of starting a blog. Up until this point, you might have assumed I don’t advocate for the focus on your mindset in terms of starting a business or launching a blog. However, that is not the case. I have always believed in the importance of mindset, the power of manifestation, and the power of attitude. For me, the issue was that I thought I’d already conquered that part of my journey. Naively, I was annoyed because I assumed I was already mentally equipped for the task at hand. I had already established techniques for managing my time. I was great at planning out how to accomplish goals, managing my time, and committing to projects. I was motivated my intrinsic values and did not permit negativity or criticism to plant seeds of doubt in my mind. My mistake, which I now recognize, was in refusing to acknowledge that I always had room to grow. I was able to recognize that in all other paradigms. I had a long way to go before I knew how to start and run a blog, but it was as if I hadn’t even considered the possibility that maybe I could learn to strengthen my mindset the same way I could learn how to build a website. One of the books I read during my educational process, Think and Grow Rich, completely transformed my understanding of the power of our thoughts. We’ll discuss this in detail later on.
